After 18 years of applying I finally drew my Colorado Bighorn Tag. To increase my odds of success I trained at the 4 day FTW SAAM course. Wow was that lucky! Took this one at 600 yards day 4 after 6 hour climb. Thanks to Tim and all the great SAAM team. Never would have gotten it without it.

It was a great hunt. Hard. Couldn’t have gotten me to believe how hard that ground was to cover just from a pictures. Weather was all over the place. A couple of good warm days hunting in t-shirt, rain with 40 mph winds, ice for 3 days…and ultimately had to get out early due to more weather coming in. The moose measured about 82″ at the shoulder. Probably went about 1600 lbs. Shot at about 260 yds. First one in the upper chest; 2nd back half/lower half as it turned, last one in neck. It moved ~20 yards from where it was 1st hit.

I took this mule deer at 720 yards with a 338 Lapua that had been Ackley Improved. I missed the first shot, but corrected for wind and killed him with the second. My dad took his antelope at 450 yards with 1 shot with his own rifle in the same cartridge.

It was more than the thrill of getting such a great elk I was particularly proud of the shot.” To me, having the skill to place the shot perfectly through hear and lungs was far more important than having such a great bull. It was 280 yards and that big beautiful animal was dead long before he fell over, he never moved more than 5 feet.
